How the Modern and Contemporary Styles Differ

In the interior design world, the terms “modern” and “contemporary” often get confused, in large part, because people mistakenly use them interchangeably. The two terms are actually completely different, and each style possesses separate elements.

The Time Periods for Modern and Contemporary Style

Although you may associate modern style with the present day, when it comes to design, modern refers to a specific period in time from the 1920s to the 1950s. This style could also be referred to as mid-century modern, but it’s typically shortened.

Contemporary doesn’t refer to one period of time. Instead, it encompasses the current design trends, which means it’s constantly evolving. Unlike other design styles, contemporary style doesn’t have set characteristics. Its characteristics change with trends and demand.

Characteristics of Modern Design

There are several unique elements of modern interior design. It’s known for being clean and having plenty of open space. There typically isn’t much in the way of unnecessary details. Floors tend to be uncovered, although you can use the occasional wool rug.

Modern furniture is usually made from natural materials. These include wood, linen, and leather. Some pieces, such as chairs, will also use polished metal and plastic. The trend toward open space continues with the furniture, which is typically raised.

Current Characteristics of Contemporary Style

Contemporary style often borrows from the past and puts its own twist on old trends. Currently, the contemporary style leans toward design focused on comfort.

Like the modern style, today's contemporary style uses open space in its floor plans. Clean, sharp lines are common among contemporary pieces found in furniture stores, but they can also feature odd shapes to give rooms a more daring look.

Why the Two Get Confused

Although the similarities in the definitions of “modern” and “contemporary” are one reason for the confusion between the two styles, there’s more to it than that.

The modern style is back in favor, with many contemporary designs using characteristics from the modern era. This has led to a blurring of the two.

The difference between modern and contemporary may be the most misunderstood area of interior design, but now you know what makes each style unique. Find the furnishings that fit your lifestyle at Fairfield Galleries in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
